Solving multiple identical SID after disk cloning

Many people use disk cloning method to copy operating systems to another computer. This method save a lot of time when copying many disk but this method could also create a major security issue. How can this be a problem? you ask. Well,  on a workgroup environment, the security is based on local SID. If there are multiple identical SID in the workgroup, then the workgroup will be unable to distinguish between the users.

The solution for this is changing the SID on every computer in the workgroup until no more multiple identical SID detected in the workgroup. For more technical detail and download SID changer, you can go here. There are other tools that can change SID such as :

  • Ghost Walker
  • Ghost Console
  • Microsoft’s System Preparation Tool (SysPrep)
  • Altiris

Please note that changing SID also come with risk read the technical detail before changing the SID.
